We follow the same agenda each week with a number of set roles that require different skills which you can learn from, below is brief description of each role.

1. Timekeeper

The Timekeeper is responsible for timing items in the meeting, and signalling at appropriate points. Throughout the meeting, timekeeper signals each programme participant as required with stopwatch and colour signal.

2. Meet & greet

Person responsible for welcoming guests and introducing them to the club members.

3. Quiz master

The role of the Quizmaster is an excellent role for a new member to begin participating in club meetings immediately. As Quizmaster your task is to create 5 or 6 questions to test the audience’s listening skills, and then ask the audience the questions you have developed. This role will not only help you develop both your listening and facilitation skills, but it also provides the opportunity for everyone at the meeting to actively practice and test their listening skills as well.

4. Ah counter & grammarian

Being grammarian & ah counter is an exercise in improving your listening skills.
You have 3 basic responsibilities:

1. to comment on the positive and negative uses of English during the meeting;
2. to introduce a new word and explain the correct use of it;
3. to count the use of ‘crutches’ such as ‘um’ and ‘err’.

All of these are designed to help your fellow members improve their use of language.

5. Chair person

The Chairperson presides over the opening ceremonies, business session and closing ceremonies. Chairperson is responsible for the smooth functioning of the entire meeting, making sure things happen on time.

6. Evaluator

After every Prepared Speech and for each Table Topic the Speaker receives an Evaluation. The purpose of evaluation is to help the speaker become less self-conscious and a better speaker.

7. General Evaluator

The General Evaluator is an evaluator of everything that takes place throughout the meeting (time-management, agenda, atmosphere & theme of the meeting and roles which haven’t been evaluated yet: timer, quiz master, toastmaster, table topics master, ah counter and grammarian, speech evaluators and chair-person)

8. Table Topics Master

Table Topics are impromptu speeches. The purpose of the Table Topics section is to help members think on their feet and speak on a given subject for between one and two minutes. It also allows speaking opportunities for those who are not programmed for other roles on the Agenda. Your role is to select topic that will inspire the speakers and encourage them to give their opinions.

9. Toastmaster

The main duty of the Toastmaster is to act as the host and make introductions. Participants should be introduced in a way that encourages the audience to listen to them. The Toastmaster creates an atmosphere of interest, expectation, and receptivity.
Usually this task will not be assigned to you until you are familiar with the club and its procedures.
